These particular crosses are the emblems of a couple of Spanish orders. These Spanish orders were made up of warrior monks, who vowed to fight the Moslems who had invaded what is now Spain.
The basic style of both crosses on the jewelry is called cross fleury, which basically means that the ends of the cross end in fleur-de-lis, instead of the normal squared-off ends. The pendant cross is very simiilar to the one used by the Order of Avis. It is a cross that has equal sides, but they all end in the very stylized fleur-de-lis. The one on the ring is similar to the cross that is the symbol of the Order of Santiago, or the Order of St. James. This one is more complex. The two short sides of the cross end in the fleur de lis design. The top side of the cross looks like a rather curved arrowhead, to me. The bottom length also looks liks a longer arrowhead, but this side is longer than the other three. If you look at a good close up of Mick's ring, you see that it is oblong to accomodate the longer end of the cross. Both of these crosses are also referred
to as Iberian crosses, which goes back to the Spanish connection, as Spain is located on what was once called the Iberian Peninsula.

Concerning the show and Mick, I think they are heading in a direction where these symbols somehow have been adopted by the vampire community. The fleur-de-lis has been given many different meanings as a symbol over the centuries. One of the symbols, from the French nobility, was to symbolize power and life, and I think that one kind of fits how most "vampires" usually think of themselves. |
