'Avatar' scorer's brave new music worldHorner matches visuals with audible vocabulary

James Horner put in 15-hour days, six days a week, from March into November scoring James Cameron's "Avatar." "Draining" was his one-word explanation of a process that has required him to score scenes multiple times, invent instrumentation for a civilization that does not exist and create music that will fall with familiarity on the audience's ears.
"It's a vision film -- it takes place in the director's head," says Horner, who has scored two to four films per year since 1981 and will register only one credit in 2009. "It's such a unique vision that it's difficult for (Cameron) to relinquish control of the music. Scenes are always changing and being re-cut. Even if I wrote a brilliant piece of music it would have to be rewritten six, seven, eight times."

Most commonly, the linear composition of the scripted scenes would be altered once the live-action footage went through a process to give it the appearance of animation. "Part of what (Cameron) is doing has never been done," Horner says. "There's a tremendous amount of freedom at first but that also can constrain him. He has to live with the shots (that are processed). A lot of it starts to take shape as these processed shots come back. Then there is so little time."

The goal was to avoid a conventional orchestrated score. Toward the end of the film, Horner notes, there are battle scenes that receive a traditional approach, "but the other seven reels are about the use of different colors."

Horner and Cameron first teamed on 1986's "Aliens." Their second collaboration, "Titanic," resulted in score and song Oscars for the composer.

As he has done with a few "Star Treks" and "Apocalypto," Horner invented a musical vocabulary with little or no historical footing. "Avatar" had two central demands: Create a musical style for the culture and yet employ traditional methods.

"An eight-minute piece of music," he says, "will go through seven ensembles -- an orchestra, two singers, weird indigenous instruments, a digitized instrument, back to an orchestra and then a solo violin, then wind instruments. All have unique colors.

"The indigenous music required instruments and vocal qualities that haven't been heard," says Horner. "Jim was very particular that it had to be familiar -- if it's too foreign-sounding it detracts. ... We decided to keep the tuning more conventional in places where the visuals are more unconventional. As a whole, it's more accessible. We tried some experiments with really weird stuff and ended up alienating the visuals. It was so overwhelming. It's good to be a little more conservative."
