Boring, Durable, Unsexy Bricks: The Remarkably Successful Ruger P85

The Ruger P85 - like so many of Ruger's products - is not particularly attractive or exciting. It introduced no particular mechanical innovation besides the casting-based manufacturing that would actually probably be seen as a detriment if it were advertised. And yet, the gun (and those developed from it including the P89, P90, P91, and P94) were massively successful, with more than 700,000 produced. What Ruger did was to continue their standard operating procedure of making a gun that was practical affordable, and reliable without trying to make it flashy - and sold it by the boatload.

Estonian M14 TP Sniper "Täitsa Pask"

When Estonia took its independence in 1991, it had to form a new military essentially from scratch. Keeping the structure that existed before Soviet occupation in 1940, two separate forces were reinstituted. One was the Defense Forces - the formal Army, with a cadre of professional soldiers and annual classes of recruits serving their obligatory military service. They purchased Galil rifles from Israel as their primary infantry rifle. The other part of the Estonian armed forces was the Defense League, a volunteer territorial sort of organization, somewhat akin to the US National Guard. Arms for the Defense League were a bit less standardized, and included a large number (in excess of 40,000) M14 rifles provided by the United States.

A small number (thankfully small...) were made into sniper rifles circa 2000; the M14 TP ("Täpsuspüss" or Precision Rifle). This was done with locally made plywood stocks designed to look like sniper chassis, local production bipods, B-Square scope mounts, and "Hawke" brand 2.5-10x Chinese optics. The result was not good. Awful, really. The scopes and mounts did not hold zero at all, and the guns gained various alternative nicknames like "Täitsa Paska" ("total shit").

The M14TP was replaced by the far superior M14TP2 in 2008, and those are likely to be replaced now by new LMT R20L precision rifles.

Thanks to the Supply Battalion of the Estonian Defense Forces Support Command for giving me access to film this relic, even though it is rather embarrassing to them!

My Most Disappointing Gun Review: The No-Recoil AR-10

In this video, I, ‪@JamesReeves‬, give you my honest and unfiltered review of the Olympus Arms Vulcan AR with its innovative reciprocating barrel system. After two years of covering this gun at SHOT Show, where it generated tons of excitement, it was finally time to put the Vulcan to the test. Spoiler alert: I was let down—big time. While the design is groundbreaking and promises reduced recoil, things went south quickly during my testing. At $6,800, this is a huge disappointment, and I’m here to give you the full story. This is simultaneously one of the most innovative and underwhelming rifles I’ve ever reviewed. Watch and decide for yourself if the Vulcan is worth the price.

    Russian Recoilless Gun Drone

What is old is new. This week imagery of a Russian drone equipped with a recoilless gun emerged. While tiny in comparison the concept behind the recoilless gun drone dates back over a century to the Davis Gun mounted on World War One aircraft.

Virtual Tour of the Czech Army Museum in Prague

I spent several days filming some fantastic Czech small arms with the VHU - the Czech Military History Institute. The Army Museum Žižkov is a part of the Institute, and they have a 3-story museum full of cool exhibits open to the public in Prague. If you have a chance to visit, it's definitely worth the time! You can find all of their details (including their aviation and armor museums) here:

Sig P230JP: A Special Pistol for the Japanese Police

The Japanese national police decided to replace their old Model 60 S&W revolvers in 1995. While traditionalist elements liked the use of a non-threatening compact revolver, others advocated for a modern sidearm - essentially a semiautomatic service pistol. Trials took place in 1995, and the SIG P230 in .32ACP was a compromise choice - semiautomatic, but compact.

The version of the P230 that SIG Germany submitted to these trials had a couple unique features. Namely a manual safety (to complement the decocker and empty-chamber carrying of the Japanese police) and a lanyard loop on the left side of the grip. However, the competition remained mired in controversy after SIG was awarded the contract, and only a few thousand were actually procured. In 2006, the J-frame scandium S&W Model 360 was adopted, returning the force to its preferred snubby revolvers.

A batch of apparently overrun P230JP pistols were imported into the US for commercial sale in 1997. Interestingly, these came in two serial number ranges. Guns in the 181xxx range are marked "Made in Germany", and guns in the 163xxx range are marked "Made in West Germany", although both have 1997 proof codes. This suggests that a supply of leftover parts from before German reunification were used to produce the Japanese police pistols.

The New CZ Bren 3: What Did They Change?

From the Mauser bolt action to the AK and AR, all new military rifles take time to perfect. With the Bren 3, CZ is now on the third iteration of the Bren platform, having gone from the original 805 to the much-improved Bren 2 and now a collection of less obvious changes to create the Bren 3. These changes have been directed by combat use of the rifle in Ukraine as well as the lessons of mass production. The main changes are around durability, taking a good system and making it better - along with a few changes to improve the modularity of the rifle. Specifically:

    - Gas settings changed from Off/Normal/Adverse to Suppressed/Normal/Adverse
    - New removable hand guard, including rail, Mlok, and UBGL versions
    - Strengthened stock attachment
    - Heavier barrel
    - Replaceable cam lug rail in the receiver
    - 7.62x39 chambering replaced by .300 Blackout
    - Optional folding charging handle
    - Slightly improved stock, and universal compatibility with collapsing "PDW" stock
    - Heavier barrel
    - Strengthening of various small internal parts

The handling of the rifle has been left essentially unchanged, and the grip/magwell assembly is interchangeable with the Bren 2 (although virtually no other parts are). The Bren 3 is only offered as a select-fire rifle for military and police customers for now, although I am sure a semiautomatic civilian version will be coming sooner or later.

    MG 42 Parts Kit!

Check out this beautiful MG-42 parts kit! Ironically this particular gun was built by Beretta in 1969. Also ironic is that this poor beauty was brand new and unfired when it was torched up into several pieces. But...it will live again!

The RK 62 M3 Clone I Used for Finnish Brutality 2024

This year at Finnish Brutality 2024, I was able to use a semiauto clone of a Finnish military RK 62 M3 rifle. This is the latest upgrade to the Finnish issued RK 62 rifle. Starting in 2015, the Finnish Defense Forces began a program to update some of their stock of RK62s. The goal was to add optics and mounting capability for lights and lasers, as well as giving the rifles adjustable-length stocks to fit different shooters and armored gear. The first RK 62 M model did this with an optics side rail, new safety lever with a finger tab, and replacement of the original tube stock with an adapter block to fit Magpul AR stocks. The follow-on M2 version added a new suppressor-capable muzzle device and an Mlok handguard. The final M3 version painted the whole rifle green.

The rifle I used is a commercial semiauto Valmet M/62S - the same type that was sold commercially in the US. It was updated to M3 pattern using parts from a company called AK2.0 (the handguard, muzzle device, stock adapted, and optics rail). It was painted green, and fitted with an FDF Aimpoint Micro and Ase Utra suppressor. It's not an exact clone, but it's pretty close, and handles exactly like the real thing.

De Lisle Carbine WW2 Special Ops

The De Lisle carbine designed by William Godfrey De Lisle was one of WW2`s most interesting weapons offering a superbly quiet fully suppressed rifle for commando raids using a .45 ACP/Auto pistol round shot through a converted SMLE MK3 actioned rifle. This De Lisle reproduction rifle from TW Chambers, Scotland is a superbly accurate rendition in every detail of the Sterling Arms De Lisle made at Dagenham during the war. Perfect for the collector or shooter wanting an historically correct rifle embodying the authentic design of the original. Build quality is excellent and every part is made to be as true to the original as possible.
25, 50, 75 and 100 yard factory ammo tests and reloads to test this fine silenced rifle to ascertain accuracy and trajectory down range and how quiet off course from this TW Chambers repro.

The Royal Armouries has a rich history of commissioning weapons from the finest fabricators in the world. Historically, we would have procured and protected the arms of the ruling monarchy. This tradition continued into the 21st century when we commissioned 'The Millennium Gun', a big-game rifle produced to the very highest standards of gun making.

    SR3 Vikhr: Russian 9x39mm PDW

The SR-3 Vikhr is mechanically based on the AS-VAL and VSS Vintorez rifles, but built to be a very compact personal defensive weapon instead of a silenced rifle. Still chambered for 9x39, the Vikhr is intended for roles like executive protection, where the priority is being compact and concealable. With elements like a top-folding minimalist stock and vz.61 Skorpion-like charging handle, the original model of SR-3 Vikhr fits this role pretty well. The later SR-3M model moved to a more traditional side-folding stock and regular charging handle.

HK21 or Portuguese m/968: The H&K G3 Grows into a Light Machine Gun

When Heckler & Koch produced the iconic G3 rifle, it was intended to be a parts of a complete small arms package. The G3 was the infantry rifle, and it was paired with the MP% submachine gun and the HK21 light machine gun for a complete set of weapons with the same manual of arms and disassembly/maintenance procedures. The first client for H&K was the West German Bundeswehr, and they were not interested in the HK21 - they had the MG3 already and were quite happy with it. Instead, Portugal would be the most significant early buyer of the HK21.

Mechanically, the HK21 shares all the same general principles of the G3. However, it has elements strengthened or modified to suit an LMG. These include a reinforced receiver, heavier recoil buffer, better long-range sights, and of course a quick-change barrel and a belt feed action. While an insert was made to allow use of G3 magazines in the original HK21, this was not a common practice. The receiver did not have the modular features that would come later on iterations like the HK21E; this was a gun really intended just for belt-fed use in 7.62x51mm NATO.

The HK21 was introduced in 1961, and Portugal adopted it as the m/968. Portugal actually purchased a license to produce the gun, and this particular example was one of many made at FMP in Portugal. The gun weighs 17.5 pounds (7.9 kg) and fires at 800-850 rpm. It is a relatively difficult gun to use well, with a comparatively harsh recoil for guns of its type. It did compete in the US LMG trials, but lost out to the FN Minimi.

Special thanks to Bear Arms in Scottsdale, AZ for providing access to this rifle for video!
