Herman Brevete: A Pepperbox Hidden in Your Bicycle Handlebars

In the 1890s, there was a lot of interest in small caliber, simple revolvers for self-defense by cyclists, primarily against dogs. This led to the creation of a whole category of “velodog” revolvers, and a Belgian designer named Herman patented this extension of the idea. It is a 6-shot, 5mm pinfire revolver that is mounted on the handlebars of a bicycle, locked in place and not obviously a gun, but easily removed for one-handed use. Mechanically, it is a simple double-action bar-hammer type pepperbox, but uses in split-pin type of cylinder axis that is unusual and interesting.

Interesting .22 Rifles: Can YOU Solve the Mystery?

I will be testing .22s in this video so make sure you watch until the end! We will also spend some time in the studio discussing the Savage 1912, the Stevens Visible Loader, and the R93 .22 straight pull. The Savage 1912 and the Stevens Visible Loader may not be quite what they seem and I'm hoping you can help solve the mystery! The R93 is spectacular, and the Winchester Model 77 and Savage 7H make guest appearances. This is a jam-packed video that I hope you find enjoyable and informative. Thanks for being here! Voere SAM-180 - Semiautomatic American 180 SMG Made in Austria?

The American 180 is a .22LR machine gun that fires at a high rate (1300 rpm more or less) from a super-high-capacity magazine (177 rounds). Conceptually it was designed by Richard Casull in the 1960s, but he only produced about 70 of his original M290 design. He sold the rights to the design, and in 1972 an Austrian company called Voere bought a license to it.

Voere thought that a fast-firing .22 with a substantial magazine could be paired with a then-cutting-edge laser sight and offered to elite police and military units for counter terrorism work. This was spurred by the 1972 Munich Massacre, in which the German police response to a terrorist attack on the Olympic Games was badly bungled. It led to the formation of GSG-9, and a number of gun designs including the Walther WA-2000 and H&K PSG-1.

Well, in addition to marketing to the police, Voere also made a semiautomatic version for civilian sale, and these were imported into the US. Today we are looking at one of those, the SAM-180.

    Springfield Kuna: Croatia's New Delayed-Blowback PCC/SMG

The Kuna is a delayed-blowback 9mm pistol/PCC/submachine gun developed by HS Produkt in Croatia and marketed int he US by Springfield Armory. Development on it began in 2020 as a commercial project, but probably also with an eye to military and law enforcement sales. The Croatian police are currently using quite old MP5 submachine guns that will need to be replaced soon, and having a domestic option seems like an obvious play for HS Produkt. The did win a trial for SMGs from the São Paulo police in Brazil, so it is off to a good start.

The Kuna (a type of marmot, as well as the name of Croatia's pre-Euro currency) was developed in .40 S&W, with a 9x19mm following. It uses a delayed blowback system similar to the HK roller-delay and the Stribog A3 system, and has completely ambidextrous controls. The US version has a 6" threaded barrel, pica tinny rear stock adapter with a folding arm brace, MP&-like backup iron sights, and proprietary magazines. The submachine gun version in Croatia uses a full-size folding stock, has a select-fire trigger (obviously), and also offers a 6.5" barrel with a trilug suppressor mount. Plans apparently exist for versions in .45ACP and 10mm Auto, as well as 12" carbines (and probably a 16" US carbine model).

Disclosure: This example was provided free of charge by Springfield Armory.

Experimental AG-42B Conversion to 7.62mm NATO

Circa 1954, Sweden was starting to look for a new self-loading rifle to adopt for its infantry. The 6.5x55mm cartridge was a good round, but the idea of having ammunition compatibility with its neighbors was appealing, and NATO was standardizing on the new 7.62x51mm round. This rifle is an experimental conversion of a Ljungman to the NATO cartridge, which included replacing the original simple gas impingement system with a short-stroke piston. It's unclear why that change was required given the successful Egyptian use of 8x57mm Mauser in the Ljungman system, but possibly it was needed in order to keep the gas block in the same place and reduce the cost of converting existing rifles should the system be adopted.

    Shooting the British Farquhar-Hill Rifle

NOTE to YouTube: This rifle was introduced in 1908, and used a 19-round magazine that happened to be in a drum configuration - but it did not have any larger magazines at any time.
    ----------
NOTE: This video was originally published on December 13, 2011. YouTube deleted it on April 7, 2025 because it referenced a verboten sponsor. I am re-uploading it with that bit censored out because I believe this remains the only online footage of a Farquhar-Hill rifle being fired.

If you can handle the horror of witnessing fully automatic fire, you can see an original 1934 clip of Colonel Farquhar demonstrating his machine guns here from British Pathé: • UNITED KINGDOM: Terrible new weapon e...
    ----------

Today we have some video of a British 1918 Farquhar-Hill rifle at the range. This rifle was an early semiauto design that was accepted by the British army too late to see service in World War I, but was used as an observer's weapon in two-seater British aircraft. It is chambered for .303 British caliber, and feeds from a 19-round drum magazine.

Domestic Burmese G3s: BA64 Rifle and BA-72 Carbine

After achieving independence from the British, Burma (now Myanmar) looked to develop a domestic small arms industry to supply its armed forces. The first weapon produced there was the BA-52, a copy of (how they chose this I don't know) the Italian TZ-45 submachine gun. By the late 1950s, talks were underway with Rheinmetall and H&K to license production of the G3 at a factory being built with German technical assistance. Ultimately Burma adopted and produced several versions of the G3:

    BA-63: A direct copy of the G3
BA-64: A light machine gun or support variant with a bipod and carry handle
    BA-72: A shortened carbine model
    BA-100: A designated marksman's rifle

Today we are looking at a BA-64 that has been rebuilt to BA-63 configuration, and a BA-72 carbine. The BA-72 is really neat to me; not only has the barrel been shortened but the receiver and stock both have been as well, resulting in a very handy and compact little rifle.

One of a Kind Prototype vz.38 Pistol in .32ACP

When CZ developed the vz.38 pistol for the Czechoslovak military, they made a number of attempts to also sell it on the international export market. This involved offering some various changes in configuration for different clients - in this case, scaling it down from .380ACP to .32 ACP. It also has a manual safety, another feature absent on the domestic military model but included in export variants. This example is the only known one produced in .32 caliber, and it has the serial number 100001.

Many thanks to the VHU - the Czech Military History Institute - for giving me access to this unique prototype to film for you. The Army Museum Žižkov is a part of the Institute, and they have a 3-story museum full of cool exhibits open to the public in Prague. If you have a chance to visit, it's definitely worth the time! Stevens Visible Loading Repeater No. 70

Joshua Stevens was the brainchild of the 22 rim fire and by 1902 was the largest producer of sporting arms in the world and father of the most unique repeater ever produced. Come with me and take a closer look at this wild design.
