INTRADA Announces: THE BLACK STALLION RETURNS
Composed and Conducted by GEORGES DELERUE

INTRADA Special Collection Volume 117

The Black Stallion Returns was the second film from Francis Ford Coppola’s Zoetrope Studios to be based on the immensely popular series of novels by Walter Farley. The first film, 1979’s The Black Stallion, told the story of how a young boy named Alec Ramsay befriended the wild “Black” after being shipwrecked together on a desert island, and how they went on to win fame and glory on the American racing scene. As the second film opens, the Black’s original owners, Berber tribesmen led by Abu Ben Ishak, abduct the horse and flee to Morocco, where they must compete to maintain their people’s honor and prestige. Leaving his mother, Alec sets out in pursuit of the Black. He finds allies in the desert, including young student Raj and the warrior Meslar, but must also contend with the villainous Kurr, leader of the rival Uruk tribe. As with the first film, events build to a climactic race—with the stakes higher than ever.

With Carmine Coppola working with his son on The Outsiders, the filmmakers approached composer Georges Delerue. In keeping with the film’s epic scope and action, Delerue’s palette is full-bodied and symphonic—although never heavy or overbearing. For the more emotionally charged cues, the melody is generally carried by winds or strings, with brass assuming prominence during action sequences and moments of special excitement. For many of the film’s Moroccan scenes, Delerue incorporates ethnic percussion to capture the flavor of tribal North Africa. The film’s main theme is a masterpiece of long-form melodic construction, leaping, diving and unfolding with such grace that each note seems to flow inevitably from the last.

The original Liberty label 1983 soundtrack album from The Black Stallion Returns gave listeners just 30 minutes of the rich, sweeping Georges Delerue score. The Prometheus label later re-issued this same album on CD, paired with the album version of the first film's score. Both were derived from 1/4" mixes. For this world premiere release of the complete score, Intrada went back to the unedited session masters, made in multiple tracks at the high speed of 30 I.P.S. This allowed Intrada to include all of the previously unreleased music as well as improve on the stereo separation of the original album master. While a fine mix, the original frequently seemed to focus heavily on the center channel, especially with respect to the brass. In fact, the final bars of the end credits had a splendid allegro triplet trumpet figure that was somewhat buried and seemed to be begging to be heard. Listeners will happily note the figure has now been freed at last for the close of the complete score portion of this CD. As a bonus, the original album assembly is also presented from the 1/4" mixes, to preserve some of the creative assembly presented on the 30 minute program

This release is limited to 1500 units.

Lukas KendallFriends, I have Rich and Famous on hand—and it's 31 min. long, WITH some alt. takes that are basically the same music, slight variations. So the actual score is around 25 min. and there is no other Delerue in the Turner library (of which I am aware) with which to pair it. if someone can suggest a suitable romantic pairing (historical pre-1986 M-G-M film) I'll release at once. Thanks

THAT MAN FROM RIO - CLASSIC GEORGES DELERUE SCORE MAKES ITS CD DEBUT!Kritzerland is proud to present its newest limited edition CD – the original motion picture soundtrack to Philippe de Broca’s classic That Man From Rio, with music by Georges Delerue.

That Man From Rio hit movie screens in 1964 and was an instant sensation. A brilliant adventure comedy thriller, the film had it all – adventure, comedy, and thrills and plenty of them, plus the star power of Jean-Paul Belmondo in the lead, along with the stunningly beautiful Francoise Dorleac as his fiancé. Also on hand were Jean Servais and Adolfo Celi, both terrific in supporting roles. The film was shot on location in France, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia (the city of the future, just then being built). The film was a huge success, especially in the United States, so much so that its screenplay was nominated for an Academy Award.

The score was by de Broca’s frequent collaborator, the great Georges Delerue. For That Man From Rio Delerue created one of his most delightful scores, one that perfectly accompanied the outrageous action on the screen. The score has so much variety and humor and melody and beauty, and in so many different styles – from pure adventure scoring to Brazilian rhythms (and some great songs), along with some hauntingly beautiful passages, and all in the classic Delerue style. The duo of de Broca and Delerue is a triumph of music and image working hand in hand.

At the time of the film’s release, two 45rpm EPs were released, one in France and one in the UK, both comprised of different material and amounting to approximately twenty minutes of music. Both were very hard to find and became very sought after collector’s items. Universal France issued what they called a “soundtrack” CD – that had only six cues, three of which weren’t from the soundtrack at all, but were re-recordings conducted by Alexandre Desplat. The reasons for this, as stated in their booklet, was that the cupboard was bare for Rio tapes in Delerue’s personal archive.

Happily, the cupboard wasn’t bare for Kritzerland and we are thrilled to present every note of Georges Delerue’s marvelous score, all taken from the original tapes. In addition to the complete score, we’ve included a few things that didn’t make the film, as well as some alternate versions of cues, where tempos were different. The CD runs over seventy minutes.

Some of the cues are mono, some stereo and are presented here exactly as they were recorded.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only. The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CDs will ship the second week of April – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to three weeks earlier. To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com
