"During my studies in the United States, I had the great fortune of being the assistant of a great pianist and keyboard player named Ralph Grierson. That’s when I accompanied him to a recording session that I met Georges Delerue, for the movie Curly Sue. It’s probably not his greatest success, but every time I listen to this score, I relive every moment of the day with the same intensity.

Ralph was a veteran of this kind of sessions and he was used to the unusual demands of the composers for whom he recorded. Yet that day, I saw him perplexed by the indication written at the top of the score. Just below “Synth I” was written “Magical sound”. No other indication. And then a series of chords to play with this “magical sound”. Ralph therefore started to program this sound, stacking a bunch of textures from different sources and electronic synths, asking me to pass him floppy disks and cards, under the amused eye of the composer who pretended impatience. In the end, George was delighted with the result.

I learned a lot watching him at work that day. How he interacted with the orchestra to extract the best while maintaining a relaxed working atmosphere influenced me a lot. I still think about it today when I’m recording. And his writing, giving the feeling that the image and music are one, that it’s easy ! The news of his death a few months later left me deeply saddened. But I keep the memory of that day in me as the most beautiful gift."

L’AFRICAIN / Georges Delerue-Philippe de Broca

Philippe de Broca loved Africa – he campaigned to protect its environment – and he'd wanted to make a film there for years. In 1982 his dream came true when he filmed L’Africain (Brain of Evil), a life-sized comic-strip of a movie with a naïve charm (not to mention pygmies, chase-scenes and aerial acrobatics) which starred the tandem of Catherine Deneuve & Philippe Noiret. To give his adventure the sound of a distant land de Broca teamed up again with his lucky-mascot composer Georges Delerue, who was immigrating to Los Angeles at the time. Delerue had the idea of a wide-open-spaces score, and he wrote a vast, symphonic, "call of the wild" piece – the musical equivalent of CinemaScope – and recorded it at Abbey Road. "What I asked Georges to do was quite simple," said de Broca. "I wanted an overture that flowed like a great African river: vast and muddy, and irresistible." But the heart of his Africain was its love-theme, one of the most heart-rending pieces which Delerue ever wrote for the filmmaker. Declined in several variations, the theme also had a song-version, Face to face, brought to life by the graceful voice of Vivian Reed. The multi-track master-tapes for the film L’Africain – a miraculous recent discovery – have made this release possible, and it comes as a timely event to mark the 20th anniversary of the composer's disappearance. This is the first stereo edition of the complete score by Georges Delerue, a key work by the composer, with a broad, generous sound which does justice to the firepower in Delerue's writing.

TOPAZ / Maurice Jarre-Alfred Hitchcock

In 1969, the great Alfred Hitchcock made a secret dream come true when he filmed a real-world James Bond in an adaptation of the best-selling Topaz espionage-novel which dealt with the unmasking of a Russian mole inside France's Secret Service. With a solid plot, an international cast and location-shooting in New York, Washington, Paris, Copenhagen and Havana, the master filmmaker had everything he needed except for a composer to replace Bernard Herrmann – their split during the filming of Torn Curtain was irremediable. Hitchcock's composer for Topaz would be Maurice Jarre, who'd moved to Los Angeles five years previously and now had two Oscars to his credit. "I was quite worried, overawed even, at the idea of working with such a legend," said Jarre. "The stamp left by Bernard Herrmann was so strong that I wondered whether I'd be capable of stepping in." Not only was he capable, but Topaz turned out to be a pure concentrate of Maurice Jarre's talents: an instrumental Meccano construction – Ondes Martenot, zither, synthesizer and accordion – of heady melodies which are almost obsessive, plunging dizzily into traditional Cuban rhythms. But above all it is a great unknown score whose melancholy and sad lyricism win out over the spy-thriller elements of the film. Specially restored from the original master-tapes, Jarre's music from Topaz is available here in its complete version for the first time: until today, it was one of the last, great Hitchcock soundtracks to remain unissued. It's a must for both Jarre aficionados and every fan of the master of suspense.

+ 20 letTak včera to bylo 20 let, co Georges odešel "Rich in Love" a krásnými melodiemi, které už nestačil napsat.
Snad nám hudební vydavatelství nabídnou v tomto roce zase něco, co ještě nebylo vydáno, abychom mohli potěšit své srdce.

THE FIRST GEORGES DELERUE'S 45 RPM RECORDS
Release date : January 2, 2012

We are pleased to reissue once again some of early Georges Delerue's recordings that were still unavailable on digital support. The specialized labels based in France have overlooked the early extended 45 rpm records in their various compilations devoted to the composer, keeping only one track from Les Jeux de l’amour and two from Le Farceur and Une aussi longue absence. In addition, our program includes Le Bel âge, Une Fille pour l'été (A Girl for the Summer) and Marche ou crève (March or Die).

These EPs - extended plays - offered the core of the music heard in the feature film : about ten minutes usually spread over four tracks. Their content in entirety deserved to be preserved.

Classical oriented compositions that bear the distinctive Delerue stamp alternate here with popular dances, cool jazz and blues pieces, fields in which the maestro from Roubaix excelled but was not specializing in, unlike many of his colleagues : Alain Goraguer, Serge Gainsbourg, Michel Legrand, Georges Garvarentz, Martial Solal and Michel Magne, to name only a few. 12-page booklet.

“Movie-making at its best…spellbinding. Something very fine, the likes of which are rare in this era.” — New York Daily News

“The blazing Miss Gozzi graduates to a woman's love through joy, homicidal rage, and searing pain, hardly making a move that does not register on the heart.” — Time Magazine

Rapture (1965) is a dark fairy tale: set against the rugged beauty of the Brittany seacoast, it tells the story of a young girl (Patricia Gozzi) whose lonely isolation under the watchful eye of her stern and bitter father (Melvyn Douglas) is abruptly shattered by the arrival of a seductive fugitive from the law (Dean Stockwell). With stunning CinemaScope images from director John Guillermin and cinematographer Marcel Grignon, this tumultuous coming-of-age fable also features a deliriously romantic score by Georges Delerue, available here as an isolated track.

Enjoy the extensive Julie Kirgo liner notes and film art packaged with the Blu-ray disc.

RAPTURE
Composed and Conducted by GEORGES DELERUE
INTRADA Special Collection Vol. 188

In 1965, composer Georges Delerue provide music for the 20th Century Fox film Rapture an almost operatic story, crammed with thematic and visual largesse. Nonetheless, Delerue resists the temptation to go big, and instead composes a score that keeps the film from going over the top, grounding it in innocent purity. The main theme is unmistakably his: string-led, tender, and endowed with an untouchable and poignant dignity. The composer also never shies away from giving us an aural portrait of a young woman who is both child-like and disturbed, in one cue presenting both aspects of our protagonist, beginning with a fragile music-box air that segues into the haunting siren call of a female voice, another motif that will reappear throughout the score—quite appropriately, given the evocative seaside setting of much of the film’s action.

While Rapture is an obscure score to an obscure film, it is nonetheless another Delerue gem, premiering on this Intrada CD from the original mono elements stored for all these years by Colette Delerue.

Based on Rapture in My Rags, an evocative 1954 novel by English writer Phyllis Hastings, Rapture boasts a cast headlined by American screen veteran Melvyn Douglas; a Hollywood child star-turned-heart-throb (Dean Stockwell); a member of the Ingmar Bergman stock company (Gunnel Lindblom); and an incandescent French 15-year-old (Patricia Gozzi). It tells the tale of Agnes (Gozzi), an emotionally damaged 15-year-old girl who lives in lonely isolation on a remote seaside farm under the watchful eye of her stern father (Douglas), who would keep his daughter a child forever if he could. When a seductive fugitive from the law (Stockwell) stumbles onto the farm and takes shelter in the barn, the inevitable results spell both ecstasy and tragedy for one and all.
