Q: I remember a Youtube video (now unfindable, apparently) showing all the music edits made to the final reel of The Phantom Menace. It was quite the patchwork. It may be anecdotal or speculative, but the general vibe seemed to be that Williams was unhappy with how the score was edited, as Lucas continued picture edits well past the main and pickup session dates. Conrad, do you remember anything like this?

Conrad Pope (kterej tu podle účasti na jeho místních akcích nikoho nezajímá): Yes, I do remember that there were a number of edits after the music had been “finalize”.
What I was told by “secondary sources” was a tale that went something like this:
Without naming names, during scoring, a friend of Lucas’s who was attending the recording session, suggested that he re-cut the film so that the cuts between the various arenas of conflict would become faster and drive toward the “ simultaneous climax “ of all the story lines (at least, in a cinematic sense- a la Griffith’s “Intolerance “.)
From what I was told, as JW was obligated to another project
, he was unavailable to do a “re-write” — and, I’m certain, he knew this was more an “editorial” fix rather than a “ completely new blank page solution”. So, the “conforming “ of the score to the new, inspired cut fell to John’s long time, dear friend and treasured colleague : Kenny Wannberg.
Whether or not John Williams was happy or not, I have no idea. All I know is that everything seems to have worked out to the satisfaction of the filmmakers and the audience- in this business, that’s a success.
Make no mistake: that success was and is grounded in the strength of the music, however sliced and diced it was; ALL the ideas are strong and they managed to remain effective after all the re-editing- guided and informed by Wannberg’s comprehensive and intimate knowledge of BOTH the score and the film.
John and Kenny’s professional “marriages” was one of the best in the business of big talents and bigger egos. To resonate and vibe musically, dramatically, artistically, professionally AND personally with a fellow composer/filmmaker—- that’s a great bond.
Composers today should find their “ music editor “ - a colleague with whom they would trust revealing themselves to.
Over the course of a project, they will be your advocate to the director, the producers and- most importantly- the film’s sound mixer ( a mix can be a negotiation- and the composer can’t always be in attendance to champion the score).
Every Don needs a Sancho.
So, Brian: That’s what I know from my “second hand” hearsay.
In any case, the further we get into Star Wars with all these sequels and “inspired by” spin offs, the less insipid Mr Binks appears in the overall trajectory of the SW universe and the more inspired the Prequels seem contextually.
In any case, without John Williams there isn’t a “Star Wars”- only space.

AFI Fest 2024 Sets Documentary ‘Music By John Williams’ As Opening Night Film

The American Film Institute has announced that Music By John Williams, a documentary on the iconic film composer from Lucasfilm Ltd, Amblin Documentaries and Imagine Documentaries, will world premiere as the opening night film of the 38th AFI Fest on Wednesday, October 23.

Directed by Laurent Bouzereau, the doc is billed as a comprehensive look at Williams’ life and career, from his early days as a jazz pianist to his 54 Oscar nominations and five wins, celebrating his countless contributions to the moving image arts, music for the concert stage as well as his indelible impact on popular culture.

One of the most influential film composers in history, who in 2016 became the first to receive AFI’s Life Achievement Award, Williams’ work spans top-tier franchises like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter and Jurassic Park, as well as such classic one-offs as Jaws, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Schindler’s List. Over the course of his career, he’s also been honored with 26 Grammys, seven BAFTA Awards, three Emmys and four Golden Globes, among other accolades. Most recently penning the scores for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, Williams saw Sony dedicate a building on its lot to him earlier this year.

In Music by John Williams, documentary subjects speaking to the ways in which their lives have been touched by Williams’ timeless music include Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, Kate Capshaw, Gustavo Dudamel, J.J. Abrams, Chris Martin, Ron Howard, Chris Columbus, George Lucas, Itzhak Perlman, Lawrence Kasdan, Yo-Yo Ma, Ke Huy Quan, James Mangold, Alan Silvestri, David Newman, Thomas Newman, Seth MacFarlane, Anne-Sophie Mutter and Branford Marsalis.

Producers of the doc included Spielberg, Brian Grazer, Howard, Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, Sara Bernstein, Justin Wilkes, Meredith Kaulfers, Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Bouzereau. Markus Keith and Michael Rosenberg served as executive producers.

“John Williams is an American icon with a true and timeless global impact,” said AFI’s President and CEO, Bob Gazzale. “One could say we are ‘over the moon’ to host the World Premiere of the film, but that sentiment would hardly soar without the music of E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL.”

Stated Bouzereau, “Growing up in France, I discovered the soundtracks I bought on vinyl ahead of most American movies that would come out months after the U.S. release. John Williams was the composer I immediately identified with; his scores made me fall in love with music, and made me realize at a very young age, the power that a score had on cinematic storytelling. This was an important story to tell, not only because it is about one of the greatest composers of all time, but because of the message it carries about the survival of orchestral music, and musicians.”

Following its AFI Fest debut, Music by John Williams will have a limited theatrical release and premiere on Disney+ on November 1. This year’s edition of the L.A.-based festival is taking place at the TCL Chinese Theatre from October 23–27.

To rozhodně.
Stačí se podívat na videozáznam z Tokia, kde John Williams působí už opravdu hodně unaveně, vyčerpaně a nezdravě, což je ale v jeho věku zcela pochopitelné a přirozené.

No, buďme realisté... Vzhledem k námaze, kterou takový koncert pro člověka v jeho věku znamená, to bude vážnější čím dál víc... :-(((
