Mauser Schnellfeuer: The Official Full Auto C96 Broomhandle

Contrary to what you might expect, Mauser was actually the last company to produce a fully automatic model of the C96 "broomhandle" pistol. The C96 was very popular in China (Mauser sent hundreds of thousands of them to China) and Spanish firms like Bestigui Hermanos and Astra jumped at the chance to make their own lookalikes and piggyback on the Mauser reputation there. The Spanish firms were also more responsive to Chinese desires for things like extended and detachable magazines and select-fire models.

Mauser shipped its first first automatic version in 1931, designed by Josef Nickl. This was not successful, and a better system was subsequently designed by Karl Westinger in 1932. These were sold primarily in China, and were reasonably popular there until European exports into China were largely cut off by the expanding Japanese invasion in 1937. The guns produced at that point but not yet shipped were held in stock, and eventually sold a year or two later to various elements of the German military like the SS (who were not part of the formal Wehrmacht supply chain).

This particular example is a 9x19mm one, which is extremely rare - the vast majority were made in 7.63mm Mauser caliber.

HK P11: NATO's Secret Underwater Pistol

Developed by Heckler & Kock and adopted by the German army in 1976, the P11 has become the de facto underwater pistol for all NATO militaries. It is an electrically-fired pepperbox style pistol with five barrels. Each barrel is preloaded and the barrel clusters are easily swapped - and must be returned to H&K for reloading. Two different types of ammunition are made; DM91 bullets for firing in air and DM101 flechette darts for firing underwater.

Many thanks to Andy at H&K for inspiring me to do this video, and to the British Royal Armouries for giving me access to this P11 to film!

Guycot: A Rocket Ball Chain Rifle From 1879

The “Guycot” is a rocket ball chain rifle system named for its two creators, Paulin Gay (the designer) and Henri Guénot (the financier). They patented the idea in 1879, and manufactured it in both rifle and pistol form - I have a previous video on one of the pistols and today we are looking at two of the rifles. The chain inside holds a series of compartment links, each sized to fit a 6.5mm rocket ball projectile (a hollow-based bullet filled with a powder charge and set with a primer in its base). This is a baseless style of cartridge, so there is no residual case needed to extract or eject after firing. These rifles have a capacity of 80 such rounds, while the pistol models held either 25 or 40 rounds.

Only a few hundred Guycot guns were made, and they were a commercial failure. This is probably due to several factors. The guns must have been quite expensive to produce, and the ammunition was proprietary, expensive to make, and likely quite fragile. The ammunition was also extremely underpowered, with only enough space for a tiny amount of powder in each bullet. This would have been fine for indoor parlor shooting, but woefully insufficient for almost anything else.

Thanks to Ader of Paris for the chance to film these very cool pieces of firearms history!

Gas Delayed Blowback Pistols: A Tour of the System

Today we are taking a look at an assortment of gas-delayed pistols, from South Africa to China to Europe. There is one predominant style of gas-delay execution, but also some variations and some substantially different takes on the concept...

The Sexy Retro Shorty: Original AR-180 Police Carbine

When Armalite designed the AR-180, they needed a factory to produce it, as their own production capacity was limited. Initially a license was granted to How in Japan, but this only lasted a few years before US involvement in the Vietnam War led Japan to cease allowing arms to be shipped to the US. In 1974, Armalite instead gave the production lice to Sterling in the UK. Sterling made a total of 12,368 AR-180 rifles, or which 10,946 were sent to the US.

In addition to standard rifles, Sterling also made a carbine version. The barrel was shortened to 10.5 inches and the gas system and handguard shortened to match. A small conical flash hider was added, and sometimes a vertical front grip. The action and stock remained identical to the standard rifle. Both semiauto and full auto carbines were made, with the semiauto ones being numbered SS225 through SS334 and the full auto ones AS001 through AS327. Few (if any) of the carbines went to the US because of their short barrel status, and most were sold in the UK - like the ones we are looking at today.

Croatian Improvised Weapons: From Obrez to Single-Shot Yugo M70 Hybrid

During the Croatian Homeland War - as in all wars of independence - a wide variety of cobbled-together firearms were used by people who could not access proper factory arms for one reason or another. Today I'm as the Sisal Municipal Museum looking at four different examples from specifically the Sisal area in Croatia. Two are 16ga shotguns (16ga was more common there than the 12ga we are used to in the US), one is a classic Enfield "Obrez", and one is a neat hybrid of a Yugoslav M70 AK onto a single shot break action frame.

Thanks to the Sisak Municipal Museum for giving me access to film these!

    Wildebeest Pistol!

I really like this gun! I use the term "beast" several times in this video, because that's what it is! Like a lot of gun nerds, I like guns for their mechanisms almost as much as for their downrange effects. And it's great to see people around the world coming up with their own designs, especially when they come out this nice! Check out Bernard's YouTube channel and drop him some comments!

Gevarm D4: An Economical MAT-49 Alternative

Gevarm was the gun-making subsidiary of Gevelot, a long-standing French ammunition manufacturer. In 1956 they brought a simple new submachine gun to market. It was chambered for 9mm Parabellum, with a simple blowback action. The construction was very basic, a combination of a tube receiver, stamped and flat components. There was two versions available; the D3 with a collapsing wire stock and the D4 with a fixed wooden stock (our example in today's video is a D4).

The French Army tested the gun and found it generally good (although they didn't like the notch sights). The Army had already adopted the MAT-49 and was happy with it, and so a military adoption had never been likely. Instead, Gevarm marketed the gun to other security organizations in France and to export sales. They did make some contracts, and produced 3-4 thousand of the guns. The French CRS and Paris Police both purchased some, along with some Middle Eastern exports. Given the low manufacturing cost, the project was not a glowing success, but not a failure either.

Many thanks to the IRCGN (Institut de Recherche Criminelle de la Gendarmerie Nationale) for allowing me access to film this rare SMG for you!

A note to censors: This video is not a tutorial on full auto conversion. It is an explanation of how the system works, and provides no instruction of how to fabricate or modify parts to modify a semiautomatic firearm into a fully automatic one. Doing that would be illegal for most people - although certainly not all; conversion or ownership of machine guns is legal in most places with the appropriate government permission.

The SAFN, aka FN-49, is one of the classic post-war European battle rifles, and was sold to nine different countries in the early 1950s before the FAL became FN's primary combat rifle offering. What is often forgotten is that despite being limited to a fixed 10-round magazine, nearly half of all FN-49s produced were actually fully automatic AFN-49s. The Belgian Army, Luxembourg Army, Luxembourg Gendarmerie, and Belgian Congo all purchased the automatic pattern. So today, we're going to take a look at how it differs from the regular SAFN that we are used to seeing.

Interestingly, a batch of the Luxembourg Gendarmerie rifles were imported into the US without anyone realising that they were automatic until hey arrived and were being unpacked. InterArms went to the IRS (the NFA was a tax law administered by the Treasury; this was before the formation of the ATF) and proposed removing the selector levers and auto sears, as well as milling off their attachment points on the receivers. The IRS agreed that this would be an acceptable conversion to render the guns legally semiautomatic only, and the changes were made before the rifles were sold. They remain on the US collector market today as an interesting example of legal conditions prior to the adoption of a pointless and punitive decree of "once a machine gun, always a machine gun".
