WF-54: The Swiss FG-42 Scaled up to 7.5x55

After World War Two the Swiss needed a new self-loading military rifle to replace their K-31 bolt actions. Two major design tracks followed; one being a roller-delayed system based on the G3 at SIG and the other being a derivative of the German FG-42 at Waffenfabrik Bern. Bern, under the direction of Adolph Furrer, had been experimenting with intermediate cartridges since the 1920s, and they used this as a basis to develop an improved FG-42 using an intermediate cartridge (7.5x38mm). The program began in 1951 and went through about a half dozen major iterations until it ultimately lost to the SIG program (which produced the Stgw-57).

Today we are looking at one of the later steps in the Bern program, the WF-54. By this point the intermediate cartridge had been discarded in favor of using the standard Swiss GP11 (7.5x55mm). The overall design was a bit simplified as well. The Bern program would continue for two more years after this rifle before ultimately losing out to the SIG 510 for Swiss military adoption.

Many thanks to the Royal Armouries for allowing me to film and disassemble this rifle! The NFC collection there - perhaps the best military small arms collection in Western Europe - is available by appointment to researchers:

Why the Nazis spent so much time making a worse STG-44: The MP43/1 with Jonathan Ferguson

The Sturmgewehr is no stranger to this channel, providing Jonathan with a fair amount of 'emotional support' over the years. This week, Jonathan gets to grips with an extremely rare example with a radically different gas system that only made the STG-44's already excellent design a little bit worse.

Welrod .32 at the Range: British SOE's Silent Assassin's Pistol

I had the chance to take a .32ACP Welrod MkII out to the range for a bit of shooting. These use a combination of baffles and rubber wipes, and the suppressor's effectiveness quickly drops from "fantastic" to merely "very good" after a few shots put a hole in the front wipe. This example already had 2 or 3 rounds through it when I started shooting, and the sound changed from a muffled thump to a more gunshot-like crack over the course of the 8 or so rounds I fired. In practice, this was really not a problem - the Welrod was an assassination tool and not something intended for use in any sort of real gunfight.

Animace 12.5 inch RML on Special Small-Port Mounting, Fort Delimara, 1885

Some British coastal forts were built in critical positions - and as a result would be primary targets for an attacking force. In addition to thick walls, it was necessary to minimise size of the gun-port openings to reduce the risk of shell or small arms fire entering the gun bay. However, a small gun port would restrict the elevation and depression possible from a conventional gun carriage. A special gun carriage was designed that allowed the gun itself to be lifted in its carriage up to 14 inches. This movement allowed the gun to be elevated to 7 degrees and depressed by 4 degrees.

Forts that were equipped with small-port carriages and platforms were Plymouth Breakwater Fort, Fort Cunningham, Bermuda and Fort Delimara, Malta.

The 12.5 inch 38 ton RML gun was a mainstay of British coastal artillery in the 1880- 1904 period - powerful enough to combat the major armoured warships of that period. Coastal forts had to depend on Muzzle Loaded guns - they were cheap, reliable, effective, and packed a big punch. While large breech loaded guns entered service in the Royal Navy in 1882, these guns required steam powered hydraulic systems to open the breech, ram the heavy shells, training and elevating. Coastal forts rarely had any powered systems so instead relied on human muscle power.

This video illustrates the 12.5 inch, 38 ton Rifled Muzzle Loaded gun on a small-port carriage at Fort Delimara. The fort is dug into a high cliff at the entrance to the harbour of Marsaxlokk, an important sheltered deep-water port on the south east end of the main island of Malta.

The gun drill is similar to my earlier video for the 38 ton gun at Fort Nothe, Weymouth, but shows the operation in a more confined space, the mechanism needed to raise and lower the gun trunnions in its carriage, and also how extra protection was provided by adjustable rope mantlets.

The Experimental SOE Welrod MkI Prototype

The Welrod was a program to develop a silent assassination pistol for British SOE (Special Operations Executive) late in 1942. It needed to be chambered in the .32 ACP cartridge, be effective to a range of 15m, and have its firing not recognizable as a firearm at 50m distance. The project was led by Major Hugh Quentin Reeves, who developed much of SOE's inventory of gadgets.

The Welrod concept was ready in January 1943, and it was not quite the Welrod that we recognize today. This initial MkI design used a fixed internal 5-round magazine and a thumb trigger, along with a rifle style bolt action mechanism. Samples were produced in April 1943, and testing showed that it was rather awkward to use. A MkII version was quickly developed in June 1943 with a more traditional style of grip and magazine, and formal trials led to the adoption of that MkII design. Incidentally, this is why the first Welrod produced was the MkII, and the later production version in 9mm was designated the MkI (it was the first mark of 9mm Welrod).

Eventually many thousands of Welrod pistols were manufactured, and they almost certainly remain in limited use to this day. This example we have today is the only surviving MkI example, however.

R20 "Rahe" - Estonia Modernizes its Infantry Rifles

In 2017, the Estonian military began the process of replacing its infantry rifles. At that time, the primary rifle in use was the Galil, which had been purchased from Israel shortly after Russian occupation ended and Estonia regained its independence in 1992. The Galils had made sense at the time, but now something more modern was desired. Specifically, a pairing of a 5.56mm infantry rifle and 7.62mm DMR rifle which shared the same basic platform. All of the major players in the firearms market responded to the initial Estonian RFP, and from eleven initial proposals the three finalists were H&K (with the 416), Sig (with the 716), and LMT (with their piston-driven MARS).

Combining the factors of reliability & accuracy, cost, warranty, and included accessories, the LMT was the winning bid. In 2019 a contract was signed for the purchase of about 20,000 5.56mm rifles and about 1,000 7.62mm DMR rifles. These were designed the R20 "Rahe" ("Hail"), and the standard configuration had a 14.3" barrel (a 12.5" barreled carbine was also included in small numbers). The standard setup is a red dot sight (initially Vortex; but later and more typically Holosun 515), LMT flip-up iron sights, and Blue Force Gear V-Tac sling. Option accessories that the Estonian MoD procured include LMT 40mm underbarrel M203 type grenade launchers, Holosun 3x magnifiers, Holosun IR light/laser units, and GSL 7.62mm multi-caliber suppressors. The rifles have monolithic upper receivers and detachable barrels (though barrel swapping is considered an armorer task and not a soldier's task).

The R20 deliveries were completed by the end of 2023, and this now represents the standard weapon for the Estonian Defense Forces. With it, they have a truly modern and capable infantry rifle capable of handling all modern missions and accessories.

Thanks to the Supply Battalion of the Estonian Defense Forces Support Command for giving me access to film the new R20 rifles as well as some of their older firearms!

CZ's New P09 Nocturne: DA/SA Polymer Frame Now With Optics

CZ has just released their new P09 Nocturne pistols, an update to the previous P07/P09 pairing. These guns fundamentally go back to the classic CZ-75. While that was (and still is) a very popular design, military and police tenders more recently have required more modern elements. So in 2007 the P07 Duty was released; essentially CZ75 mechanics with a modern look and a polymer frame. This was only offered as a compact model, until in 2009 the design was overhauled. At that point, the compact remained the P07 and a full size companion piece was released as the P09.

Now, the design has been updated again, as the P09 Nocturne. The compact is the P09C and the full size is the P09F, and both come with optics cuts as standard. They are only compatible with the mini-red dot patterns however, as the internal firing pin safety in the slide limits the amount of material that can be removed for the optic. For individuals and agencies who want a modern DA/SA system (with either decocted or manual safety), the P09 Nocturne is now an option with all the modern features.

Pump-Action AK: Romanian PAR-3 (How Not to be an "Assault Weapon")

Between 1994 and 2004, there was a national "assault weapon" ban in place int he United States, along with some related importation restrictions on military-looking rifles. Most semiauto rifle importation continued by adjusting various cosmetic features to not fall under the provisions of the various rules, but at one point someone realized that hey, the law only covered semiautomatic rifles. So if the gas system were replaced by a manual pump action, a rifle would no longer be prohibited regardless of its other features! As so, in 2002, the Cugir factory complex in Romania produced the PAR-1 (in 7.62x39mm) and PAR-3 (in 5.56x45mm). About 2000 were imported by Century, where they were not particularly popular (because they are really pretty kludgy rifles) and no further importation was done (and the PAR-2 in 5.45x39mm was never brought in at all).

Hunting in Communist Romania: Nicolae Ceaușescu's Finnbear 61

Nicolae Ceaușescu ruled România through much of its communist period, from 1967 until 1989. Ceaușescu was a passionate hunter, and owned more than 100 firearms, mostly for hunting. These included some gifts from foreign dignitaries, but also plenty of more humble examples. Under his rule, conservation was actually fairly well done in Romania, and hunting was possible for the regular folk. Today we are taking a look at one of his personal rifles, a Sako Finnbear 61...

Thanks to MP Armory and A.N.C.A., the Romanian national firearms collectors' association, for making this video possible!
