My wife Anna is in the other room working on this score for James Horner right now. She’s working on preparing parts for the orchestra and the music looks very interesting. He’s using a moderately large orchestra including some oddities like 3 keyboards (doubling on celesta & harpsichords), and the very unusual bass harmonica and bass accordion.
Also, I notice that he is not using click track on any of these long cues. Instead, he’s conducting all of his music free timed to picture, clock, punches, and streamers. This is very unusual these days, and something to be admired. The recording sessions are taking place today through Saturday.

I was at one of the sessions last Thursday at Todd-AO. I wasn't there when they were recording any of the cues with any potential themes. But what little I heard of the score sounded very good.
From what I was told, Horner's score will be the last one recorded at the Todd-AO stage before closing on December 1st.
Horner told me that he was the first composer to use the stage when Todd-AO took over in 1990 and now ironically he's the last to use it before it's being dismantled. |
